Today the WordCamp Europe #WCEU 2015 was announced to be in Sevilla, Spain in June of 2015. Really nice. I just want to be there in summer. That’s what I would really do. If I could.
If things stay as they are now I will not travel to Spain this year to WCEU. There are a few reasons for that. Today I want to get serious, I write about money, about costs. If you can’t stand this and leave now, do so. I wish you all the best. Really! Still, I will talk about money today.
Travel from Thursday, June 25th to Monday, June 29th
(2 conference days, 1 contributor day, 2 travel days)
~ 30-60 € for WordCamp ticket :-)
+ flights to Sevilla and back:
~ 380 € from Leipzig or Dresden *
~ 50 € additional travel costs to airports in Germany
(plus unknown costs for traveling in Sevilla in the city…)
(* from Berlin would be cheaper but with additional bus/train costs)
+ Hotel in Sevilla, 4 nights:
~ 80-100 € per night = 320-400 € in total
+ additional costs for food?
+ additional costs for pups etc.
Makes in total:
780 € for the cheapest variant
or 890 € for the more expensive variant
+ all the additional costs I don’t know yet…
So it could really be about 1,000 € or more for those 3 days, plus 2 travel days.
Yes, I know that is a bargain compared to other conferences where you pay 1,000 € alone for the conference tickets…
Now, I know what you will say: Aren’t these WordCamps primarily about networking, meeting people, chatting, hanging out in the pups, sightseeing and so on, plus some sessions and lightning talks. Isn’t THIS all worth the money? — Absolutely, WordCamps are. And, it is worth it. You are right. However, not for me at this time in life.
One Month of Family Life
It’s nearly about 1,000 Euros. A lot of money. Even if I cut one day off, get a cheaper apartment via services like “Airbnb” and cut more costs, I maybe could not cut down under 500 Euro. Still, 500 Euros is a lot of money. I don’t have this at this point, and even if I would have already earned it, I couldn’t spend it this year.
The cost listed above is the amount of money that my family and I live by one full month (or even more…). Rental costs, health care, plus food on the table and all other stuff that’s needed for a little family of three, and soon four :).
And this just brings me to my second thing: we expect our second child in summer. So, traveling to Spain might be awesome, and really cool, but maybe not if your newborn will be just a few weeks old then.
At the time I am writing this I am watching a video of Chris Lema speaking at a big WordPress-oriented conference. He’s one of the greatest storytellers before the Lord in the world of WordPress. He speaks about his story, his essentials, core values. Those include family, slowing down, reducing the pace. Having different times in your life. I guess, I am in good company.
My “family time” seems to be now. Some “networking WordPressing hanging out time” will come sometime later. I could have the rest of my life for it if I would.
One of my core values is family. It is not always easy, you know. But I care!
So if there will be no miracle, then no Sevilla for me this year. I wish the whole community an awesome good time! Oh, and I will “watch” the Twitter stream again, like I did last year.
P.S. At least some live streams would be nice. So think of us Armchair WordCampers :-)
